Here are just a few people who went through the Oceanside school system and went on to college. They have all been inducted into Laurel Elementary's Hall of Fame, along with about 90 other individuals.
ROSEMARY MAGANA attended Palomar College, San Diego State University, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Communicative Disorders and then went on to National University, for her Teaching Credential. Rosemary now teaches in the Oceanside Unified School District.
SANTIAGO RENDON graduated in 1992 from the Arizona Automotive Institute with an Associate's Degree in Auto/Diesel Technology. He worked as an automotive technician until 1998 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After he was discharged, he enlisted in the Army Reserves and attended the Fire Academy during that time. Santiago has also received an E.M.T. (Emergency Medical Technician) license from Palomar College. He is now a member of the Camp Pendleton Fire Department, Hazardous Materials Team.
OFELIA RODRIGUEZ attended Palomar College, MiraCosta College and the Sheriff's Corrections Academy. She would like to continue in the area of law enforcement. Ofelia works as a San Diego County Sheriff's Corrections Deputy.
JAMES MICHAEL COLEMAN attended MiraCosta College, National University and Chapman College, majoring in Criminal Justice. He was a police officer with the Oceanside Police Department for 10 years. After advancing to detective with the Banning Police Department, he attended a national law enforcement training program in Phoenix, Arizona and is now certified to teach grades K-8 in a subject called GREAT, an acronym for Gang Resistance Education and Training.
ARMIDA GARCIA earned an Associates Degree in Accounting/Bookkeeping from MiraCosta College. Armida now works as an Accounts Receivable Analyst.
DUANE COLEMAN is the Associate Superintendent of Educational Services for the Oceanside Unified School District. Dr. Coleman received his Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Hawaii in 1982. Over the course of his career, he has gone back to school several times, receiving an Education Specialist Degree, a Master's in Business Education, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. He started his career in education in 1985 at El Camino High School as a teacher and a coach. He went on to become an Assistant Principal, a Principal, and Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction before taking on his current role.
ANGELINA KELLY graduated from the University of California, Irvine in 1998 with a B.S. in Computer Science. She decided to go back to school several years later, to get a Master's Degree from the University of Denver. She graduated in 2007 with her degree in Computer Information Systems, Information Security. Angelina now works as an Information Security Analyst.
